Detroit Falcons - 2010

Big changes are afoot this year. Kariann Anderson has moved to Texas and will no longer be working as Peregrine Coordinator for SE Michigan. Her replacement is Chris Becher, who begins the job today (April 4th). Chris has worked in the area as a Naturalist for a number of years and just happens to be a VP in Macomb Audubon. As the season progresses we'll add information to this page as we receive it, and don't forget to check out falcon pages from the previous few years.

Latest Update: September 19, 2010

You can contact Chris and Barb by e-mail at peregrine_notes@yahoo.com. Kariann passed the account over to Chris in order to make the transition smoother.

April 1, 2010 Update from Barb Baldinger

Peregrine Patrol started this season without Kariann Anderson who was the SE Michigan Peregrine Falcon Coordinator for five years. Kariann and her family moved to her husbandís home state of Texas in November. We will certainly miss her! However, I am pleased to announce that her replacement, Christine Becher was hired by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources this week. Many of you know Chris from her many years as a naturalist at Metro Beach Metropark and co-leader of Birding and Natural History Tours with Randy Baker of Naturalist Endeavors. Chris and I have been buddies for 25 years, so I know we will work well together! Here are the updates so far for this season:

MT. CLEMENS: Hathor and Nick have started nesting on the NE corner of the Macomb County Building. One egg so far. Unfortunately, there will not be a web cam available this season. The deputy director of the Macomb County IT Department said although they still have the camera that Macomb Audubon helped purchase, some of the equipment they have used in the past is now being used for other county business. Therefore, the county no longer has all the dedicated equipment it needs to stream live video of the falcon. Very disappointing news!

WHITTIER BUILDING: Miriam and Allegro are showing courtship behavior, but have not started nesting yet.

FISHER BUILDING: Volunteer Maria has reported that Rogue and an unidentified male have been courting and mating, but have not started nesting.

JACKSON COUNTY TOWER BUILDING: Kariann and I visited this site last year and after a search of the roof and corners did not find any suitable area for the pair of Peregrines present there to nest. Pea-gravel was added to all four corners this spring and nesting began right away. The female was identified as Big Red from Chicago, hatched in 2008. She has laid 3 eggs so far.

There is a Falcon Cam at this site: http://96.61.192.55:8888/update.html

If you have any Peregrine sightings, you may still send them to peregrine_notes@yahoo.com. Kariann passed on the account to assist in making a smooth transition.

April 21 Peregrine Update from Christine Becher and Barb Baldinger

What a great day of Peregrine Patrol! Last Friday, we received word that two Peregrines have been seen lately at the Campbell-Ewald Building in Warren. We checked it out with volunteer Terri Udvare today and we were lucky enough to read the bands on both birds! The male is Zeus (Hatched 2009 at LTV Steel in Cleveland, Ohio; black/red 73/B). The female is Nebesny (Hatched 2008 in a nest box on the Burlington Lift Bridge in Burlington, Ontario; black 29 over black X). She was named in honor of Hamilton resident Elisabeth Nebesny, who worked in the community on beautification projects. There was some Peregrine activity here in 2005, so an employee built a nest box on the roof. There is a scrape now, but no eggs. Considering the young age of the male, we hope they will stay together and reproduce next year.

Nesting is progressing at several of our other sites:

  • MT. CLEMENS: Hathor and Nick are incubating 4 eggs.
  • WHITTIER BUILDING: Miriam and Allegro have at least 3 eggs.
  • AT&T DETROIT: There are 4 eggs confirmed.
  • UD MERCY and the BLUE WATER BRIDGE falcons are showing nesting behaviors.
  • AT&T PONTIAC: We have observed a pair present, but they do not seem to be using their new nest box yet. They perch on the AT&T tower and on the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital next door.
  • FLINT: Majesty and Barry are not using either the Durant Hotel or the UM Northbank Center, however we did see a pair of Peregrines downtown. More observations are planned.
  • Allegro at the Whittier Building, March 31st

Now for news on our SE Michigan offspring:

Scout (Hatched 2005 at the Fisher Building in Detroit; b/g P/72) is in her fourth year of nesting on the 41st floor of the Rhodes State Office Tower in downtown Columbus, Ohio. There are two cameras here with live streaming video. You can switch from the nest box cam to the ledge cam:

  • Nestbox Video Cam
  • Ledge Video Cam
  • BB (Hatched 2007 at the Whittier Apartments in Detroit; b/g N/58) is in her second year of nesting at the MacKay Tower, University of Buffalo South Campus, New York. BB and an unbanded male had 4 young fledge successfully last year. This season, she has a new mate, Yankee from the Niagara Gorge, Ontario. They had three eggs when an intruder engaged BB in a talon locking fight. One egg was broken before Yankee chased off the intruder. She later laid another egg, bringing the total back to three. There is a Falcon Cam at this site.

Freedom (Hatched 2007 at the Blue Water Bridge; b/g 46/N) is in his second year of nesting under the I-480 Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio. He and a female named Maddy had 3 young fledge successfully last year.

Clementine (Hatched 2008 at Macomb County Building in Mt. Clemens; b/g *S/*X) is still at Ohio State University Campus in Columbus, Ohio, but does not appear to be nesting this year either.

And for news from our former SE Michigan Peregrine Falcon Coordinator, Kariann Anderson had baby boy #3 in Texas on April 13. Congratulations to Mom, Dad and big brothers!

You can contact Chris and Barb by e-mail at peregrine_notes@yahoo.com. Anyone who would like to volunteer a couple of hours a week to watch for Peregrine activity in Pontiac and Flint, please contact us.
