Macomb Audubon Society’s participation in the 107th Annual Christmas Bird Count was on Dec. 16, 2006 with 36 people in the field and another 5 at feeders. The weather ranged from 29 to 48 degrees with no precipitation. We had a total of 62 species and 16,725 individual birds. Some of the species not seen every year were Horned Grebe (new on count day), Bald Eagle, Bonaparte's Gull and Northern Shrike. There were 120 Red-tailed Hawks beating the previous high in 1996 of 96. New highs were also set for Wild Turkey (60) and American Coot (160).

We would like to thank all of the participants for the time and effort you volunteer each year to make this count a success. Thank you to Betty Ebert, Arlene Lynch, Angela Slayton and Colleen Traylor for doing such a great job with “decking the halls” for the tally. They even brought “boughs of holly”! Thanks to all of the people who contributed soups, chili and various snacks. We would also like to give a great big thank you to Rick Campbell and the Stony Creek Nature Center for hosting the tally. This year’s count will be on Saturday, Dec.15th and hopefully the tally will be held in the NEW Nature Center at Stony Creek. Please mark your calendar now and plan to help out.

Thanks again,
